Patio Coffee Shop is a straightforward, casual spot on W 25th Ave in San Mateo that caters mostly to locals looking for a solid breakfast or lunch without fuss. This coffee shop leans into a laid-back, diner-style vibe — small and low-key, with friendly staff who keep the service quick and unpretentious. It’s the kind of place where regulars stop by for a morning pick-me-up or an easy midday bite.

The coffee selection fits the neighborhood’s casual rhythm well: expect dependable options like Americano, cappuccino, and some sweeter picks like the white raspberry mocha or caramel macchiato. The coffee quality isn’t flashy but satisfies the role it plays in a busy morning or a quiet afternoon. The atmosphere invites solitary coffee drinkers as well as small groups to settle in, with some seating at the counter that’s ideal for people watching or casual conversation.

Breakfast and brunch here come with straightforward, hearty plates — from classic egg dishes like Eggs Benedict and various omelettes (including vegetarian choices like mushroom artichoke with feta) to breakfast sandwiches and combos. For something a bit different, the Portuguese and Hillsdale omelettes, or a Philly cheese steak sandwich, give a touch of variety beyond standard diner fare. Portions feel generous without being over the top.

Given the menu and vibe, Patio Coffee Shop suits locals who want good value and simple comfort food rather than trend-driven café cuisine. It’s a setting where you can beat the morning rush easily, thanks to typically fast service and accessible street parking nearby.

  • Best for: Easy breakfasts and casual lunches with classic diner staples and coffee in a relaxed, low-key setting
  • Who will enjoy it most: People seeking a no-frills, quick meal or coffee stop, including solo visitors and small groups
  • Best time to visit: Morning or weekend brunch hours, when parking remains manageable and the pace is unhurried
  • Atmosphere: Friendly and simple with a diner-style ambiance, suitable for casual hangouts or grabbing food to go

Nice little place for a weekend brunch. The food and coffee were nothing fancy but it was tasty. Liked the idea of having a coffee while sitting at the counter. I ordered a double cappuccino and a breakfast burrito.

Small casual low-key diner style, good friendly service. The menu has some more healthier options, as well as some options for breakfast/lunch without eggs. Usually can find easy street parking.

Cute place to go get coffee and breakfast by yourself. I particularly liked their white raspberry mocha coffee and eggs Benedict with some fruits.

A little gem in the old downtown. The cafe has a patio in the back which allowed for more intimate conversations and relaxing atmosphere. The breakfast wasn't super fancy but it has side dishes that made it possible to create a healthy breakfast for our small bodies. We had oatmeal with a pouches egg, Sunnyside up over an English muffin, coffee and tea. Everything tasted good. Good price too. Our server was super nice. Overall a great experience there.

The food here was nothing fancy, but very tasty..they also have a good variety of breakfast choices at a reasonable price...nice selection of coffee choices as well with healthy milk options for your specialty brew. I had the regular drip which was hot and delicious. They have outdoor seating in a small area off street filled with plants and sunshine.... nice little find
